CLOUD LATTICE for MARIMBA
PROGRAM NOTES
The concept for this piece began with the image of a crystal lattice, a tightly knit structure formed by a repeating pattern of atoms. From the outset of the piece, the marimba embodies this concept by introducing several musical lines, in contrasting registers, which are interlocked rhythmically. However, as the piece unfolds, the individual lines and their interactions display a more fluid development, breaking away from the static repetition of the crystal structure. This contrast inspired an image of a lattice formed not by atoms, but rather, by a cloud.
